A device of gold color metal and enamel 1 inches (3.18 cm) in height overall consisting of a white octagon bearing a maroon Greek cross charged with a winged lion passant guardant, his right forepaw resting on a book and holding a dagger vertically, all gold; all above a triparted maroon motto scroll bearing in gold letters the words COURAGE COMPASSION CARE from left to right.
Maroon and white are the colors used for the Army Medical Branch. The cross is a traditional symbol of Medical units. The eight-sided white background suggests purity and devotion to the many medical mission specialties of the hospital. The lion of St. Mark reflects the units home area and signifies the support the hospital provides to the Southern European Task Force units in Italy, Greece and Turkey.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 29 March 1982.
